Cell (journal)
Cell is a peer-reviewed scientific journal publishing research papers across a broad range of disciplines within the life sciences. Areas covered include molecular biology, cell biology, systems biology, stem cells, developmental biology, genetics and genomics, proteomics, cancer research, immunology, neuroscience, structural biology, microbiology, virology, physiology, biophysics, and computational biology. The journal was established in 1974 by Benjamin Lewin and is published twice monthly by Cell Press, an imprint of Elsevier.

History:
Benjamin Lewin founded Cell in January 1974, under the aegis of MIT Press. He then bought the title and established an independent Cell Press in 1986. In April 1999, Lewin sold Cell Press to Elsevier.
The "Article of the Future" feature was the recipient of a 2011 PROSE Award for Excellence in Biological & Life Sciences presented by the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers.

Impact Factor:
According to ScienceWatch, the journal was ranked first overall in the category of highest-impact journals (all fields) over 1995–2005 with an average of 161.2 citations per paper. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2010 impact factor of 32.401, ranking it 14th out of 8005 indexed journals.

Contents & Features:
In addition to original research articles, Cell’s "Leading Edge" section publishes previews, minireviews, reviews, analysis articles, commentaries, essays, correspondence, and Snapshot (a reference tool presenting up-to-date tables of nomenclature, glossaries, full signaling pathways and schematic diagrams of cellular processes). Features include "PaperClips" (short conversations between a Cell editor and an author exploring the rationale and implications of research findings) and "PaperFlicks" (video summaries of a Cell paper).

Availability:
Content over 12 months old is freely accessible, starting from the January 1995 issue.

On the cover: In this issue of Cell, Tachibana et al. (pp. 285–295) assess the developmental potential of rhesus macaque pluripotent and totipotent stem cells by chimera assay. They find that pluripotent embryonic stem cells and cells from isolated inner cell masses do not contribute to chimeras. Rather, aggregation of totipotent early embryos was required. The cover image shows “Roku,” a chimeric monkey produced by embryo aggregation.

On the cover: The image shows a girl who is thrilled at discovering the 3D organization of the genome. In this issue, Sexton et al. (pp. 458–472) present a high-resolution chromosomal contact map of the Drosophila genome derived from a modified genome-wide chromosome conformation capture approach. In the image, the 3D glasses metaphorically represent Hi-C and its quantitative modeling as tools that allow the girl to “see” 3D chromosome structures. Sexton et al. deduce the 3D genome organization by bioinformatic analysis of chromatin contact maps, comparisons to previously published epigenetic profiles, and iterative cycles of mathematical modeling. On the cover: Circadian rest:activity rhythms in animals are regulated by endogenous clocks that are typically synchronized to the day:night cycle. In this issue, Luo and Sehgal (pp. 765–779) identify JAK/STAT signaling as a component of the pathway that functions downstream of the clock in the regulation of rest:activity behaviors in Drosophila. They show also that circadian effects of JAK/STAT are modulated by a microRNA, miR-279. The cover image depicts a day:night adapted clock that turns on, or downregulates, JAK/STAT signaling, represented by a “Jack” from a deck of cards. The “Jack” is shown to hold a “sword”—a stem-loop shaped precursor microRNA. Artwork by Lili Guo.

On the cover: In this issue, Wang et al. (pp. 1001–1014) identify a differentiation checkpoint that eliminates hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in response to DNA breakage and telomere dysfunction. Executed by BATF, the checkpoint impairs self-renewal of damaged HSCs by the induction of lymphoid differentiation. On the cover, the pool of HSCs is represented by the feathers of the bird. Damaged stem cells—the red feathers—are removed by activation of the BATF-dependent differentiation checkpoint (black), which leads to changes in tissue composition and molting. The paper-cutting artist Yumaahi Maki created the cover collage with a combination of Japanese paper under the scientific direction of Yohei Morita and Lenhard Rudolph.
