《If You Think You Know How To Love Me》在广播节目里播放。
The album, “The Other Side Of The Road” was released in November 1979 and was the first Smokie album not to contain a single Chinn / Chapman song. Instead, the writing was divided pretty much into two separate songwriting camps within the band. The Chris Norman / Pete Spencer compositions now shared a healthy rivalry with the Alan Silson / Terry Uttley tunes, the latter of which would usually feature either Alan or Terry as featured vocalist. Without benefiting from the inclusion of so much as a single UK hit, the album sold relatively poorly at home and didn’t trouble the British album charts. Thankfully, it fared much better overseas, where the singles had been more successful, spending 6 months in the German albnm charts and peaking at # 17. In Sweden the album reached a fairly disappointing # 26, whilst it did manage to get as high as # 7 in both the Austrian and Norwegian album charts.
As the 1970’s drew to a Final conclusion, the ever trendy UK media turned it’s attention to the New Romantic movement. Meanwhile, Smokie continued to plough their Country-ish Rock furrow with slowly diminishing returns. Despite the fact that they had, in the past, demonstrated their ability to absorb the temporary setback of the odd flop single, the engine which had driven them through four years of hits was starting to splutter. Having said that, although the sales figures were down compared to Smokie’s usual standards, they were still enjoying a level of success in many countries which would be more than most artists could ever hope for.
Another European single was culled from the albnm in March 1980, although it would not be given a UK release. “San Francisco Bay” / “You’re You” reached # 10 in Austria and # 9 in Germany but fared less well in many of the surrounding countries. The A-side was another Chris Norman / Pete Spencer composition, very much in the style of their earlier Chinn/Chapman hits, whilst the B-side was written by Alan Silson and Terry Uttley.
Smokie had entered the new decade with a good deal of their worldwide fan base intact, although it was becoming clear that the ‘good ship’ Smokie had not sailed into the 80s with a full head of steam. The vessel had sprung a few leaks along the way, which needed plugging urgently if the band was to continue to enjoy the worldwide success to which it had become accustomed. Moreover, they were in urgent need of a song to restore them to the British charts, having now gone a full year without a hit in the U.K..
N.B. Included as bonus tracks on this CD reissue are the non-album B-sides of the appropriate single releases plus the rare 1979 recording “Maybe I Just Don’t Know” which was first issued on the German compilation CD “The 25th Anniversary Album” in 2000. – Phil Hendriks
