This is an album of cinematic love songs with lyrics and melodies that get under the skin and linger in memory. It’s almost impossible not to come away humming them. Payne sings with a breathtaking sincerity that courses through his voice and colors every word. “Your Love, My Home”, the CD’s title track, is a soaring anthem whose culminating line, “I will make your love my home”, has the ring of a wedding vow. Payne’s lyrics are eloquent, direct, and often unexpectedly profound — like the best lyricists he conjures vivid images and emotions with simple words. “Remember Yesterday” contrasts the fleeting nature of a relationship with the transformative power of the love it awakened, “Even if we let it slip away . . . Love will remember yesterday”.
“Nature” is a glowing, rousing hymn to the wonder of nature seen through the eyes of a child. A song about falling in love, with an enchanting, old-fashioned feeling, “The Moon” sparkles in a spare quartet arrangement with guitar. “City Song” is a pop-rock drama about a rarer kind of heartbreak — risking a friendship to speak out against a comrade’s dangerous liaison. “My World” is a beautiful song that sets up a gentle lullaby feeling and builds to the heart-melting plea, “Don’t come around here making any memories, unless you promise me you’ll stay.”
