詹家龙：那些蝴蝶教我的事

Before Chan Chia-long came across Purple Butterfly Valley, the research he did was all on rare endangered butterflies. However, a few years ago he went to Kaohsiung’s Maolin Township for the filming of a documentary and saw purple crow butterflies en masse. This sight moved him so deeply that he has since focused his research on this special butterfly.
詹家龙在无意间走进紫蝶幽谷之前所从事的研究都著重在稀有、濒临绝种的蝴蝶上。而就在几年前，他为了拍摄一部纪录片来到高雄县茂林乡，看到了紫斑蝶群。这个景象让他极为感动，从此詹家龙全心投入研究这种特别的蝴蝶。

Maolin’s Purple Butterfly Valley is where Taiwan’s purple crow butterflies spend the winter. At the southern end of Purple Butterfly Valley is the valley mouth, with the high mountains to the north acting as a protective screen. Here, butterflies can survive while the majority of Taiwan’s other butterflies perish during the winter months.
茂林的紫蝶幽谷是台湾紫斑蝶过冬的地方。紫蝶幽谷的南端是谷口，北方则有高山作为屏障。冬季时，台湾大多数的蝴蝶都会死去，而这里的蝴蝶却得以存活下来。

There is only one other place on earth where butterflies fly for the winter, and that is Monarch Butterfly Valley in Mexico. Each year up to six million butterflies arrive there, and their numbers are so great that they bend the branches of the trees on which they perch. Yet Chan thinks that Taiwan’s Purple Butterfly Valley is even more beautiful. He explains that four kinds of butterflies can be seen there, whereas in Mexico there is only one kind of butterfly. He says that the metallic sheen on the purple crow butterflies’ wings “is like a prism. A person could never tire of watching such a beautiful sight.”
世界上还有另一处有这种越冬型的蝴蝶，也就是位於墨西哥的帝王蝴蝶谷。每年有多达六百万隻的蝴蝶会飞到那里，其数量庞大到足以将牠们盘据的树枝都折弯。不过，詹家龙认为台湾的紫蝶幽谷更漂亮。他解释说这是因为在台湾可以观察到四种不同的蝴蝶，而墨西哥却只有单一种类的蝴蝶。他说紫斑蝶翅膀上的金属光泽「就像三棱镜一样，如此美丽的景象怎么都看不腻」。

Through his research on purple crow butterflies, Chan hoped to raise people’s awareness about the need for environmental protection. “Although this protection may not give an immediate benefit to me,” he says, “it will benefit many future generations.”
詹家龙希望透过研究紫斑蝶来提高人们的环保意识。「儘管从事生态保育对我没有什么立即的利益，」他说；「但对后代子孙会有帮助。」

He first started field research of purple crow butterflies with the assistance of volunteers. In 2004, he followed Taiwan’s Butterfly Highway, which is more than 100 kilometers in length. It drew the attention of the National Geographic Channel, which funded the filming of a documentary entitled “The Butterfly Code.” This in turn helped reveal the beauty of Taiwan’s Purple Butterfly Valley to the rest of the world.
詹家龙最初是在义工朋友的协助下展开他的紫斑蝶田园调查。二○○四年时，他追踪出台湾的蝴蝶公路，总长超过一百公里。这引起了「国家地理频道」的注意，出资拍摄了一部名为《蝴蝶密码》的纪录片，进而将台湾紫蝶幽谷的美展现在世人面前。

Chan is particularly grateful to Maolin’s Rukai Tribe for helping him achieve all that he has to date. Members of this tribe, for example, taught him how to capture and tag butterflies without harming them. To do this, he catches only a few butterflies in a net so they don’t sustain injuries from collisions with each other, and he sets them free immediately afterward .
詹家龙尤其感谢茂林鲁凯族人的协助，他才有今日的成就。比方说，鲁凯族人曾教他如何捕捉、标记蝴蝶，才不会伤害牠们。为此，他一个网子内只捕捉几隻蝴蝶，以免蝴蝶因为彼此碰撞而受伤，并且在标记后立刻将蝴蝶放生。

Chan feels that the experience of studying these butterflies has improved his life. For the purple crow butterflies and their unique ecosystem, perhaps his work will prove to be an even greater blessing.
詹家龙觉得研究紫斑蝶让他的人生更完美。但对於紫斑蝶及其独特的生态而言，或许詹家龙的投入才是更大的福气。
