The Titanics are the greatest band currently rocking. I know you think you have a band that is better, but you are wrong. Dead wrong. You’ve never even heard of The Titanics (there are more than one band with this name so make sure you have the right one) so you don’t know what you are talking about.
Coming from Brisbane (quickly moving to Sydney) Australia, The Titanics lineage can most easily be traced to the moment that another great Aussie band, Custard, broke up. Consisting of exactly half of Custard’s lineup, pop folklore conduit and lead singer David McCormack continues the tradition of exploring the far ends of rock and pop, while having more fun with a guitar and a synthesizer than is legal in most states. Joined by Emma Tom on bass (chick bass player’s are definitely more cool than your lame-o bass player) and Tina Havelock-Stevens on drums (chick drummer : we’re two for two!), McCormack also inlists ex Custard drummer Glenn Thompson who switches to guitar and vocals.
While Thompson sings during songs he leads like “Chito” (“I’ve had 9 cappuccinos!”) it’s really McCormack’s show : he’s too much of a presence to sit in the back seat. Starting with “The Devil Is High”, through the sexy “Hello Pussycat”, and avoiding a “Disco Suicide” with a “Millionaire Adventurer Balloonist” (“We were hanging with the cocktail waitresses in first class”), it’s hard to keep up with the concepts being drilled through your ears. McCormack loves to find our current culture’s quirks (both social turns and musical styles) and turn them on their comic or emotive ear.
Much kudos is leveled at the bonus disc supplied with some copies of this CD. Possibly the most addictive of all Titanics songs is “Robot Ladies” : a summer sing along hit if there ever was one. These tunes should be on the main album! Follow the instructions below, and the kids will love you for it.
Dusting themselves off from the demise of leisure pop masters CUSTARD, DAVID McCORMACK and GLENN THOMPSON have amalgamated forces with satire journo queen EMMA TOM and drum machine TINA HAVELOCK to relaunch themselves as THE TITANICS and deliver more nifty and manic pop joys to the world. ‘LOVE IS THE DEVIL’ bounces with havoc from the joyous wobbling synthesizer of ‘DEVIL IS HIGH’ to the quirky and ohhh-ahhh elctro pop of ‘SET THE CONTROLS FOR THE HEART OF THE SUN’ (a transformation of the PINK FLOYD number) and the David Bowie meets Kraftwerk collision of bleeps and blurps in ‘DANCE DANCE DANCE’. Luring your ears with an eclectic pop spectacular of tracks so damn catchy, you’ll be lucky to be humming along to anything else, THE TITANICS cram kookiness and wit into ‘LOVE IS THE DEVIL’ with a self assured style and charm that well lives up to the legacy of CUSTARD.
