尽管Best way的这款游戏在官方发售表被归到了即时战略里，不过《Heroes of World War Ⅱ》却和一般意义上说的RTS有本质的区别，它即没有资源要你去采集，也没有大票的部队供你去指挥，或许唯一共通的地方便只有“即时”这一点而已。实际上，《Heroes of World War Ⅱ》乃是一个类似《盟军敢死队》或者《隐藏与危险2》那样的游戏。不过除了继承了那些我们习以为常的设计之外，《Heroes of World War Ⅱ》还能让玩家亲自来控制士兵来一个准确的爆头，或者是打断坦克的履带，在游戏中配合精确真实的物理模型来实现各种以往难以想像的战斗。
在游戏中，你将带领不大的一队精锐士兵深入战线的后方，完成各种艰巨的任务。如果制作组没有临时改变计划的话，《Heroes of World War Ⅱ》将包括四个大的战役，每个战役中的若乾任务都会有一个完整的故事将他们连在一起，比如俄国的战役便是由寻找一名被俘的坦克车手开始的。《Heroes of World War Ⅱ》一共包括30余个任务，在战斗中你会遇到各种各样的武器车辆，从小刀到狙击步枪、轻重机枪、莫洛托夫鸡尾酒等超过25种武器，以及从摩托车到70吨重的虎王坦克等100种以上的根据真正的图纸重现出来的各式车辆——这意味着它们的回转速度、装甲、开火速率等等性能都会像当年一样。不过我必须要指出，这并没有什么值得炫耀的，有两位数以上的各种真实装备差不多是所有二战游戏的必要条件了，而《Heroes of World War Ⅱ》真正的精彩之处也并不在这里。
实际上《Heroes of World War Ⅱ》之所以如此令人期待是由于丰富的细节以及真实的物理效果——不管这是凭借强大引擎还是依靠乌克兰人的耐心生做出来的——总之这看上去就像真的一样。你在游戏中见到的各种物件都是分成一个一个部分来设定的。坦克的履带可以被打断而不能移动，一次直接击穿炮塔的射击也会让它失去武器。若是打爆卡车的轮胎，你会看到卡车失去控制停在路中央、脱落的轮胎在路面上滚动。而真正令人激动的是，游戏中所有的东西，车辆、树木、建筑都有着这种程度的细节。
你周围的环境并不只是拥有精细的模型和贴图而已，游戏中的任何东西都会被炮火、爆炸所影响。只要你的火力足够强（比如88mmKwk42嗯嗯……），就可在地上造出一个个弹坑、折断树木、炸塌墙壁、把房屋一点一点地轰成瓦砾，甚至一炮穿过脆弱的墙板打到建筑物另一面的敌人。士兵的射击可以击碎玻璃窗、车辆的风挡，乃至打灭路灯来制造黑暗。若你用机枪攻击一辆卡车时，可能只是将其变成一堆满是筛孔的废铁，而若是换重炮来上那么一发的话则会把目标炸个稀烂，无数的碎片会随着爆炸落在卡车周围，中间只剩下一堆燃烧着的残骸。
游戏的操作说起来也颇简单，就像一个真正的即时战略游戏那样，你选择手下的士兵，给他们指定一个目标，然后让他们挪到合适展头的地方，告诉他们什么时候开枪。你还可以给士兵下一些详细的命令，比如隐蔽、警戒、保持不开火等等。不过因为战斗规模的限制，实际上的感觉会有些像《铁血联盟》《辐射战术版》这样的战术游戏。
除了普通RTS那样的简单操作之外，你还可以亲自控制一个士兵（或是一辆坦克），来进行准确的射击。在一段令人惊叹的演示动画里我们看到玩家控制的一个士兵单独对付公路上开来的车队，他首先将前面开路的摩托车手一枪击毙，步枪的冲击力将那个倒霉的家伙从摩托上掀下来，然后失去控制的摩托车翻倒在路中央。接着他又换用冲锋枪向后面开来的卡车的驾驶室开火，打碎风挡玻璃击毙司机——整个过程便如同动作电影里那样流畅精彩，这也是《Heroes of World War Ⅱ》着力宣传的又一个卖点。
同样是因为游戏更加偏向小团队策略，《Heroes of World War Ⅱ》的AI也要比寻常的即时战略更加复杂。你不必手把手地教你的部下怎么做，你会在战斗中看到士兵们像那些真正的战士一样出色，他们会贴墙小心前进、转过墙角之前还会先探头看，他们会自己找掩护、会在合适的时候丢上几个手榴弹。游戏出色的AI设计使士兵不必玩家随时照顾也能作战——最起码不会在你专注于地图的另一边时被几个突然冒出来的敌人一锅端掉。
你的对手也并不笨，游戏中敌人同样相当强大。他们会协同作战、呼叫支援，如果你在行动时引起敌人的注意的话，AI会马上进入警戒状态。他们会四处搜寻你的存在，一旦战斗开始便会一拥而上——当然不是像《盟军敢死队》里那样直挺挺地跑过来，敌人和你的士兵一样会借助掩护小心地向你进攻，一样会向你的部队丢手榴弹——而若是他们无法接近你的阵地（或者说打不过你）便会叫来车辆支援。游戏中坦克真的会利用火力压制你的行动，然后慢慢把你藏身的地方轰平，或者是让步兵趁机从侧翼包抄。
游戏的图像同样令人赞叹，除了真实的人物和车辆之外，那些树木、建筑等等物体也都被完美地刻画出来，你可以看到那些残破的房屋周围被仔细地撒上了瓦砾，墙上剥落的油漆和弹痕也都清晰可见。《Heroes of World War Ⅱ》的引擎支持天气效果以及真实日夜循环，这就意味着你在任务中将会遇到各种各样的情况，风雪、雨天、大雾等等，而且最妙的是这些都会对你的作战有所影响——小心天上的闪电，这会让敌人在漆黑的夜晚发现你！
