克劳迪奥·蒙特威尔第（Claudio Monteverdi，1567－1642）
　　音乐史上第一位能在今日国际乐坛享有令誉的作曲家，当属蒙泰韦尔迪。他是意大利作曲家，对歌剧、和声学、交响乐的发展都有深远影响。他的歌剧被认为是历史上的第一批歌剧，包括《柯费斯》(Orpheus)、《坦克力与克罗伦达之战》、《尤里适斯回国》、《朴比的加冕》。而其他很多作品已经遗失。除歌剧以外他还写了超过250首牧歌、2套尊主颂以及其他很多声乐作品，但是他从未写过纯乐器作品。
　　虽然在今天基于实际需要，他的音乐风味听起来与三百年前曼多瓦或威尼斯爱乐者耳中所听到的实况，有了很大的差距，但是却又仿佛能永远契合于现代人的心灵。自古以来，非但音调已经改观了，甚至蒙泰韦尔迪在世时所惯用的乐器到今日亦不见其原始风貌。虽然如此，他的音乐听来仍然激越、聪灵，富含人性。这是一种大胆的音乐，背后更有蒙泰韦尔迪卓尔不凡的创作技巧烘托着。
　　从许多方面来看，蒙泰韦尔迪的歌剧甚至比瓦格纳或普契尼的作品更符合现代人对歌剧的概念。就我们的观点来说，出现于蒙泰韦尔迪之前的音乐，甚少具有斐然的个人风味，唯独蒙泰韦尔迪在这方面显得出类拔萃。他那强而有力、风味盎然，又能将心境表达淋漓的声音，藉着清晰直接的方式，赞颂著人生的喜怒哀乐。
　　自小蒙泰韦尔迪只要心所向往，必定能将之谱成乐曲，而且成绩不恶。不过世俗音乐却较之宗教音乐更能撩起他的兴趣，此一倾向终其一生未尝稍改。早在1584年，他就以短歌小调打破了旧传统的藩篱。当时意大利许多流行形式——诸如假面舞乐、芭蕾舞曲、田园牧歌、佛罗托拉歌曲，以及其他歌曲与舞曲形式——都能深深吸引着蒙泰韦尔迪。牧歌尤其叫他废寝忘食。
　　蒙泰韦尔迪的牧歌情意盎然，技巧纷陈，自成一完美的音乐世界。他眼界开阔、历练丰富以后，开始改造作曲规则，以求适才适性，悠游于这些小品形式中而享有更大自由。其音乐中某些效果突出的和声，足以令任何时代的爱乐者惊讶不已，因此许多人以“具有表达力的不和谐音”相称。
　　歌剧占去蒙泰韦尔迪绝大部分时间。他的搭档是裘里欧·史卓希。这两人都对剧本和情节表现抱持坚定的理想。两人对文诌诌、典雅脱俗的语言同表鄙夷，只对角色的合理发展感兴趣。他们共同寻求音乐的真理，认为角色的本质要比一些不相干的音乐更具重要性。最重要的作品当属《奥非欧》。其中揉合了牧歌的要素，以及佛罗伦萨小厅集团的单音观念。
　　1637年之后，蒙泰韦尔迪又创作了两部歌剧《尤里西斯返乡记》及《波佩阿的加冕》。后者超越了三世纪的时空，正中二十世纪理论家的下怀。因为他要求的，正是剧中无论大小细节都必须服膺于简明的音乐性戏剧底下——把音乐与戏剧等量齐观的态势终于形成了。蒙泰韦尔迪并不把歌剧看作为求表现歌手巧啭的歌喉、或者试验作曲家创制优美旋律的的能力，而随意将不相干的小品拼凑起来的大拼盘。
　　蒙泰韦尔迪的歌剧及莎士比亚的戏剧，同是十七世纪前半叶的瑰宝，也同样是问题丛生。包括编辑问题、他的真正意图、管弦乐团的理想状况、实际的表演情景、歌手们的表现等等。
　　蒙泰韦尔迪跨坐在文艺复兴与巴洛克时代交替的门槛上，然而“巴洛克盛期”乍到，又冲毁了这位伟大威尼斯作曲家所代表的乐派。我们必须记得，在蒙泰韦尔迪的时代，有幸付梓的歌剧寥若晨星（因造价太过昂贵），况且用以传播思想的机械构造不多，而对历史地位的看重，亦是后来才有的观念。遭人遗忘的苦果并非由蒙泰韦尔迪一人独尝，因为在他那个时代，根本没人会以乐名而常驻人间。幸而今天鲜少有人会否认蒙泰韦尔迪是第一位能以其音乐力量打动现代听众的作曲高手。
　　他一生共创作了九部牧歌集、二十一首宗教牧歌、二十一首三重唱、十五首三声部谐谑曲、十首二声部谐谑曲、近百首宗教作品和几部绝对堪称精品的歌剧《奥菲欧》、《波佩阿的加冕》等。这些还不包括他已经失传的众多作品。
