乐队于1964年组建。起初乐队的名字叫“Warlocks”，后来乐队的成员开始服用LSD（本人注：迷幻摇滚时代在乐手间最流行的迷幻药）并开创了“迷幻摇滚”的先河。同时他们还成为第一支在吸毒后即兴表演的乐队。也是在这一时期乐队改名为“The Grateful Dead”。

The Grateful Dead was an American rock band formed in 1965 in San Francisco, California.The band was known for its unique and eclectic songwriting style—which fused elements of rock, folk music, bluegrass, blues, country, jazz, psychedelia, and gospel—and for live performances of long musical improvisation. “Their music,” Lenny Kaye wrote, “touches on ground that most other groups don’t even know exists.”
The Grateful Dead’s fans, some of whom followed the band from concert to concert for years, were known as Deadheads and were renowned for their dedication to the band’s music.Many followers referred to the band simply as The Dead.
Their musical influences varied widely with input from the psychedelic rock of the era, combined with blues, jazz, rock and roll, and bluegrass. These various influences were distilled into a diverse and psychedelic whole that made the Grateful Dead “the pioneering Godfathers of the jam band world.”
Common themes in their lyrics include typical American motifs, like those of love and loss, life and death, gambling and murder, beauty and horror, chaos and order, God and other religious themes, travelling and the road, etc. Less frequent ideas include the environment and other issues from the world of politics.
