由知识广博而且及具煽动力的歌手krs-one和dj scott la rock两人组成的boogie down productions(bdp)是80年代众多具有影响力的hiphop团体之一。作为hardcore和政治说唱的先驱，scott la rock通常使用的都是简单的节奏，以很小限度的背景音乐来强调krs-one充满内涵的歌词。他们的声誉来自于初期对街区生活的现实主义叙述。在scott被暗杀之后，krs-one更加关注社会和政治，并得到了“the teacher”的绰号。90年代初他以自己的名义发行了唱片，这也意味着退出了bdp。至今，krs-one依旧是一位能够坦率直言并且值得敬重，充满智慧的hiphop歌手。

最好朋友的去世给krs-one带来了不小的打击，不过他在恢复精神之后决定将bdp继续下去以纪念死去的la rock。他找来了兄弟kenny parker来做dj，并且有召集了d-nice和ms.melodie（ms.melodie曾一度成为krs-one的妻子）。
由于jive公司有力的支持，krs-one在1988年完成了专辑《by all means necessary》，专辑中对社会以及暴力的阐述使它成为了说唱史的一个里程碑。同一年，在bdp与public enemy的联合演唱会上，一个年轻的歌迷被打死了。由于这件事，krs-one创建了“stop the violence movement”，在1989年组织了许多明星录制了公益歌曲“”self-destruction”，并且将得到的50万美元作为慈善捐款捐给了national urban league。

在这期间，bdp依然在录制唱片。1991年发行了《live hardcore worldwide》，这也是早期的hiphop现场专辑之一。它主要收录了首张专辑以来的一些歌曲。应听众的要求，bdp更加努力的制作了他们在1992年的专辑《sex and violence》，但是却未能赢回以前的听众。这时，krs-one与ms.melodie离婚了，而且减少了与kenny parker这些bdp成员的合作。他的下一个计划是在1993年完全以自己的名义发行首张个人专辑《return of the boom bap》。从那以后，他又发行了一些个人专辑，并且依旧经常出现在媒体以及巡回演讲中。
