1955年2月8日，约翰·格里森姆出生在阿肯色州的琼斯博罗。1967年，他在密西西比州的南阿文(Southaven)定居。1977年，他从密西西比州立大学获得了会计学士学位，随后在密西西比州大学法学院就读，并于1981年获得法律学位。同年，他与蕾妮·琼斯结婚。他在南文设立了一项法律实践，在那里他实行了刑法和民法。1983年，他当选为密西西比众议院议员。1989年，他出版了自己的第一部小说《消磨时光》(A
